As I stated in Part 1, there are two things that will make a massive difference if we put them into practice when we face one of life's storm's. Number 1 was to 'Praise Him in the Storm'
Number 2 is this:
We, by nature, are selfish people. Our sinful nature will always shift us towards focussing on ourselves - to live for ourselves, to care about ourselves above others, to love ourselves, and to want others to worship us. And our society has somehow made all that into a virtue. Crazy!
Sin doesn’t help us, it hurts us.
Self obsession is not satisfaction.
Jesus said this
“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it."
Does that sound like a riddle to you, if you save your life you'll lose it; if you lose your life, you'll save it?
We can put it like this:
live for yourself and it’ll make your life worse,
live for Jesus and it’ll make your life better.
Do you know, the tendency for us, when we go through storms, is to focus even less on others and more on self. We get consumed by our troubles - it's almost all we can focus on. We feel that we have to concentrate on ourselves in order to sort everything out.
Do you know what happens then? We become more miserable, we feel more self pity, and we see only problems, issues, failures, flaws and a bleak future. Things are difficult enough to start with, but then we make things worse by becoming even more consumed with self.
Can I say this to you? I say this tenderly, carefully, and respectfully. I say it in love and with real hope, because I know it's the best thing for you. It's kind of a tough love thing.
Here we go.
When you go through tough times, turn to God, spend time with him, worship him, remember everything he has done for you and what you have in him, and know his peace. But also, stop focussing entirely on yourself and your problems. Your main antidote, which will cure you from doing that, is to positively live for God and to live to see others blessed.
Praise Him in the storm. Spend some time thanking Him for all He has done for you.
Die to self. Try to forget about yourself and your troubles a little and focus on living for God and others.
These are 2 things you can do through every storm. In fact, these are THE two best things you can do, period!
